7 Ways God’s Unconditional Love for Us Is the BEST Kind of Love
Last week, we dug into God’s Word to learn more about the character of God. We examined scriptures that show us the width and depth of His majesty and power. I pray that as you soaked in each Bible verse and lifted your prayers to Him, He revealed His wonder to you.
Today, we take the next step to fully knowing God’s unconditional love for us.
We go back to His Word so that we can find out how God’s love differs from all other love and why it is the best kind of love.
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. -John 4:16 ESV
Read that verse again. Let it sink in. Really sink in.
God is love.
It doesn’t just say He has love to give. But that HE IS LOVE.
I stop and think of the time my husband surprised me with roses for my little writing space. Or, of the unexpected messages of love from one of my teenagers. They made a difference by encouraging me and giving me all the ooey-gooey feels.
But here’s the thing. Even though those moments are precious gifts, they are unsustainable. My husband will fail. He will say or do the wrong thing. My kids will roll their eyes or say something to disappoint me.
I think you get my point.
We as humans have much love to give, but God is love.
He embodies love. As the author of love, He cannot nor will not ever fail at His unconditional love for us.
So, I ask, “To which love should we anchor ourselves?”
To a love that will fall short?
Or to one that is secured and cannot fall short?
When we look to others to make our hearts full, we hold them accountable for something they are incapable of fulfilling. We set them up for failure and we set ourselves up for hurt.
However, perfect love is calling. And if we anchor ourselves to that perfect love — God’s unconditional love for us — we will rest in perfect peace and love. Then, we find the ability to love others from an overflow rather than from the leftovers of a broken soul.

Sunday
His love is for everyone. One of the most well-known scriptures is John 3:16. In it, He tells us He sent His Son to save the world. How many of us are capable of loving everyone? That’s a tough task.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” -John 3:16-17 ESV
Monday
He not only loves but forgives His enemies. That is a great big love. And it is great big forgiveness. Huge acts of forgiveness are so rare today that they make the headlines. But God forgives and loves millions who break His heart every day.
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” -Luke 23:34 ESV
Tuesday
What God gives is more important to Him than what He gets. His love is sacrificial. It is agape love. (selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love, the highest of the four types of love in the Bible)
“Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” -Romans 5:7-8 NIV
Wednesday
His love is immovable. It’s independent of our mistakes or life situation. We cannot experience the fullness of His freedom, peace, and joy until we accept His love and fully give Him our hearts in return. However, whether we do that or not, He still loves us.
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” -Hebrews 13:5 ESV
Thursday
His love digs in and gets personal. It isn’t afraid to confront. Nor is it limited by time. Never too busy, God is with us at all times and in all things. After all, God, with His love, literally takes up residence in our heart.
“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” -Ephesians 3:17 NLT
Friday
His love is perfect. It does all the things we attempt but fail at day in and day out. God’s unconditional love for us is the love that sets the bar and provides the model. If we could master this kind of love, our world would be hate-free.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” -1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV
Saturday
His love is humble. Pride does not inhibit His expression of love nor his ability to sacrifice for His children.
“…Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” -Philippians 2:5-8 NLT
I pray these Words describing god’s unconditional love for us sink in deeply. Friend, we are loved beyond measure. We just have to realize it.
A Prayer to Receive God’s Perfect Love
Dear Father, I am humbled and amazed at your majesty. Your power. Your perfection. The evidence is all around me. Thank you for giving me Your Word to plant deep within my soul. Your Word is Truth in a world that whispers many lies.
Thank You for your sacrificial love. Your perfect love. Your radically different love. And thank You for calling me Your child. Lord, I ask You to remove the scales from my eyes so that I can fully see You. And I ask You to fill me with the courage to open my heart to Your love. I believe Your love can change everything. I believe it can fill my heart like no other. So, right now, Lord, I ask you to please fill my heart with your unconditional love so that I may be complete and love others from an overflow.
I declare my wandering days as behind me. And I claim my identity as a reflection of Your love. May my life be a living testimony to the power of Your love. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

- Which of this week’s verses resonate most with you? Write it on a card, on your mirror with a dry erase marker, or hang it on your refrigerator. Repeat it every day this week. Read it out loud. Pray it. Ask God to reveal Himself to you through it.
