6 Bible Verses About God’s Goodness: Why it’s Important to Know the Truth
Have you ever desperately needed to remember that God is good? Bible verses about God’s goodness become treasures we cling to when life falls apart around us – when the diagnosis comes, when relationships fracture, or when we’re simply exhausted by trying to be “good enough” on our own.
In this seventh post exploring the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit, our guest writer, Deb Wolf of Counting My Blessings, invites us into her journey with the beautiful vulnerability anyone who knows her is familiar with. Deb walks us through the Old and New Testaments to show us God’s heart and His goodness that can naturally flow through us when His Spirit lives within us. Her words feel like sitting with a wise friend who understands the struggle but gently guides us back to a foundation of grace.
Discovering God’s Goodness in the Psalms
I always tried to be a “good girl.” A stern look or correcting word was enough to convince me to change my behavior. As you might have guessed, I’m a firstborn.
We think of being good as following the rules. But when Lori asked me to write about the Fruit of Goodness, I wanted to know more, so I grabbed my Bible and started searching.
I learned in the Old Testament that God is good…
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6
Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness. Psalm 145:7
Bible Verses About God’s Goodness Working Through Us
In the New Testament, I learned that He wants His goodness to shine through us.
For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17
You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for He called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9
But we’re not good on our own. Goodness is the Holy Spirit working in and through us for God’s glory. That’s why Paul called it the Fruit of the Spirit…
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22–23
When Our Own Goodness Falls Short
I can’t tell you exactly when I realized that no matter how hard I tried, I would always be a sinner in need of God’s grace. Maybe it was the year a life-changing crisis turned our world upside down. We needed God’s help, and I needed an extra measure of strength and peace.
Helplessly, I dropped to my knees and surrendered every part of my life to the Lord, and I asked Him to fill my heart and use me for His glory.
Please don’t misunderstand, I’m inconsistent. I still struggle with all the same things you do, and I need to ask God to forgive me every day.
I prayerfully ask Him to help me remember what Jesus said when He was asked to name the greatest Commandment…
“The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31
Surrendering to God’s Definition of Goodness
Maybe the best way to define Goodness in the Fruit of the Spirit is as follows…
Surrendering ourselves to the love of God, asking Him to fill us with love for Him and others making it our heart’s desire to trust and obey Him for His glory.
A Prayer to Experience God’s Goodness
Please pray with me…
Father God, You are loving, patient, and kind. Everything You do is righteous and caring, and You faithfully keep Your promises. You promised to send a Savior and sent Jesus to suffer the punishment for our sins.
I want to be good, but I’m not. No matter how hard I try to obey You, consistently and faithfully showing compassion and kindness to others, I fail. I can be whiny, impatient, and selfish. Please forgive me through my Savior, Jesus.
Please give me the strength I need to love You and the people in my life the way You desire. I love You and give You my all. By Your grace and the power of Your Spirit, please help me.
I surrender this day to You. Please help me follow where You guide and do Your will as You reveal it to me so that I might live this day for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
How Love and Bible Verses About God’s Goodness Connect
“God’s commands are designed to guide you to life’s very best. You will not obey Him, if you do not believe Him and trust Him. You cannot believe Him if you do not love Him. You cannot love Him unless you know Him.”
~ Henry Blackaby
There’s a reason the Fruit of the Spirit starts with love. Without love, none of the other things listed are possible.
But when God pours His love into our hearts through His Spirit, it flows through us into the lives of those around us.
There is freedom and peace in knowing that we don’t have to deliver goodness on our own because we have a gracious, merciful, and loving God who takes pleasure in helping every surrendered heart live with goodness for His glory.
