Bible Verses About Adoption That Will Give You Hope
All of life is complicated and requires direction, wisdom, and hope to survive with hands raised in victory. It wasn’t any different during the years of our adoption. We needed help to get through it victoriously. Undeniably, that unwavering help came from Scripture. Therefore, we started with Bible verses about adoption.
Wherever you are in the adoption process, I can’t recommend anything more than to dig through the pages of your Bible and tuck God’s Word away safely in your heart. (And if you aren’t in the process, but know someone who is, gift them with the Word of God to encourage their walk!)
These verses aren’t just about adoption, though.
But the verses God gives us about adoption are not just for the adoptive family. They are for those of us who need a reminder that our God fights for us, defends us, and calls us His. They are for those of us needing to rest in His strength and under His wing.
As a matter of fact, these verses are for all of us. All of us forget from time to time that we matter, that we are loved and that we are created with and for a purpose.
These #adoption #bibleverses are for all of us who forget from time to time that we matter, that we are loved, and that we are called to something with purpose Share on XI am sharing with you six Bible verses about adoption that were some of my favorites, yet there are many more. As a matter of fact, I share 30 of the verses we clung to over the more than two years of our adoption process. I made them into printable Bible Verse Cards and they can be downloaded as my gift to you on the page for my new book, Surrendered Hearts: An Adoption Story of Love, Loss, and Learning to Trust. You can find them HERE.
But for now, here are six of my favorite Bible verses about adoption!
He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner living among you, giving them food and clothing. -Deuteronomy 10:18 NIV
I prayed for this child, and the Lord granted my request. -I Samuel 1:27 GW
Yet, the strength of those who wait with hope in the Lord will be renewed. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and won’t become weary. They will walk and won’t grow tired. -Isaiah 40:31 GW
Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing and refusing to let the world corrupt you. -James 1:27 NLT
Father to the fatherless, defender to the widows -This is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families: He sets the prisoners free and gives them joy … -Psalm 68:5-6 NLT
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me —the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on the day of His return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to His appearing. -2 Timothy 4:7-8 NLT
The Hope We Find in God’s Word
As I mentioned before, all these and more are my gift to you and complement the Surrendered Hearts book. I pray they are of encouragement to you. Without God’s Word, our family wouldn’t be where it is now. Without tucking it away in my heart to meditate on during the times of grief, I’d be lost. And without Scripture to pray over our situations and our family, I know I wouldn’t have these words of hope to offer you. And I know I wouldn’t have been able to write the message of my heart within the pages of Surrendered Hearts.
Friend, wherever you are and whatever you are facing right now, I challenge you to open the pages of your Bible. After all, we have to start somewhere – anywhere. You don’t have to read the whole book at one time. Take it in small chunks. Today you may start with just one verse. Tomorrow another. But someday, by the grace of God, you will long to soak in His every Word.
Then one day, you will feel a different kind of hope. One that is everlasting. One that doesn’t correlate to the ups and downs of the world we live in, but rather, stays steady no matter what.
Surrendered Hearts May Be the Inspiration You Need to Trust God Today.
Before I leave you, my book is the story of our daughter’s adoption. Yet it’s more. It’s God’s story of showing us He never leaves. And it’s a story that shows exactly how trusting God’s Word and the act of surrender changed everything for us. It was the breakthrough that helped us move forward and open the doors to God’s version of how our story should go. Surrendered Hearts is for anyone who wants to find peace and learn to embrace life even when we face challenges.

Lori, I love the way you are putting an arm around those who are in the adoption process–and your words give such insight to all of us.
Adoption is truly a beautiful picture of a much larger reality!
It really is – I never would have understood that without walking out the journey with God. ♥
Thank you for giving prospective adoptive families hope and encouragement. I love your daughter’s name. It’s beautiful!
Thank you, Laurie! I knew before we met her that her name would be Selah. Then the day I first saw her picture, I knew she was our Selah ♥ Each day she is a reminder to reflect upon the goodness of God.
Blessings,
Lori
What a great post!
Love the verses~
Melanie
Thank you, Mel ♥
Wonderful verses to remind us of whose we are. God clearly has a heart for adoption. He adopted us into his family and adopted the foreigner into the Israelites. Some even getting in the genealogy of Christ.
So true, Theresa! Thanks, friend!
So much hope. Thank you. laurensparks.net
Blessings to you, Lauren!
Great post! We’ve adopted 2 boys back in 2011. These Bible verses will help me cope with those difficult times. Thank you!

Hi Latisha, I am so happy to share these verses and the other resources with adoptive moms like you! Adoption is a beautiful gift and one I wouldn’t ever trade, yet the trials are sometimes very difficult. Sending you much love!
Thank you for encouraging others who are adopting or have adopted, Lori. This verse really brings to mind how much you prayed for Selah, even when you thought you’d lost her – “I prayed for this child, and the Lord granted my request.” -I Samuel 1:27 GW Thank You, God! Blessings and hugs to you, Selah, and your entire family!
Thank you, Trudy! Prayer is such a gift God has given us ♥
God’s Word is definitely the ultimate comfort Lori. Great encouragement here.
Blessings,
Jennifer
Amen! And thank you, Jennifer!
What a blessing to realize that God has adopted us all into His family! Thanks for these verses that remind us of that reality. May we never forget just who chose us!
Amen, Donna! How much more beautiful life would be if we never forget!
You’re right that these verses are really for all. “But the verses God gives us about adoption are not just for the adoptive family. They are for those of us who need a reminder that our God fights for us, defends us, and calls us His.” Thanks, Lori!
It’s been remarkable at how God used our adoption journey as so much more. He taught us about following a call, the difference between waiting and waiting well, and how to surrender our version of life for His version. Even though those verses were precious to me during our adoption, they are still precious to me today in many other scenarios. He uses His Word to guide us in every facet of life!
Love the verses! Thank you for your continued encouragement. Blessings, Maree
Thank you, Maree!
Adoption is hard. It is something to do only with God’s leading and his presence through each step. These are great verses to remember.

Such beautiful encouraging verses to take to heart and to help us truly know His extravagant love for us! Another besutiful post!
Thank you, Cheryl! When we experience His love, it makes all the difference!
